Paul Bern was a 1920s and 1930s movie writer, director and producer during the Golden Age of Hollywood.  He assisted in launching the careers of the famous movie stars, Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford and his wife Jean Harlow to name only a few.

This was also a time of great turbulence in the United States and the World, related to the Great Depression of the 1930s and also the Pre-Code of decency era of the movie making, a standard being developed that had a moral conduct in how much content related to sexuality and other aspects of moviemaking may deemed appropriate for the time.

Paul Bern was a kind man and was widely portrayed in the media as "The nicest man in Hollywood" and "The Hollywood father confessor" for his unselfish giving of his time, money, advice and moral support to aspiring young actors, and being one of the most creative, writers, directors and producers of transformational movies during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Viewing these movies, took the public away from the struggle, worries and pressures of their everyday life, during those hard times, giving them a magic, soothing and sometimes healing retreat.

According to the book: Paul Bern, The Life and Famous Death of the MGM Director and Husband of Harlow by the renown journalist, E.J. Fleming, Bern donated 40% of his income to charity.

Fleming also quoted an excerpt from the October, 1932, issue of Motion Picture magazine that described the man that movie star Jean Harlow had just wed: "For Paul Bern, there is no Right and there is no Wrong. There is no Black and no White. There is no Good and no Bad. There are only human beings…Just people caught between the cradle and the grave, doing the best they know how in, sometimes, the worst of all possible ways, needing belief more than bread, a brother more than a judge. This is the man Jean Harlow has married."

PAUL BERN WAS THE MAIN CREATOR AND PRODUCER OF THE OSCAR-WINNING FILM: GRAND HOTEL, AS PER E.J. FLEMMING'S SCHOLARLY BOOK, YET, THE CREDIT WENT TO IRVING THALBERG...

The Grand Hotel was a film concept creation developed by the producer/director Paul Bern.  L.B. Mayer known for his desire to change events and strategy related to the studio, decided it was best for Irving Thalberg to receive credit for the film.  Paul Bern and Irving Thalberg were always great friends and working partners and did not have any say when L.B. Mayer decided to use his controlling and dominant personality to do what he felt was going to make an image for the MGM studio to stand out more than the other studios at the time.

Yes, Paul Bern, was the respected MGM third ranking executive after Louis B. Mayer and Irving Thalberg (second, ahead of Irving Thalberg, according to the scholarly review of Yves Laberge from University of Laval, Department of Sociology:

.)

Paul Bern, producer, director and writer, and among the main creative minds in blockbuster films, depending on who is describing him, is either the “nicest guy” in the Golden Age of Hollywood, around 1930s, or the meanest…

Was the death of Jean Harlow’s husband Suicide or Murder? This is still a lingering question wrought with controversy. Though recently, the answer is more pointing toward a murder.

On September 5, 1932 MGM Producer Paul Bern, recently married to the screen icon Jean Harlow, was found shot to death at their Benedict Canyon home. As per E.J. Fleming’s book: Paul Bern, The Life and Famous Death of the MGM Director and Husband of Harlow, and the book: DEADLY ILLUSIONS, Jean Harlow and the Murder of PAUL BERN by Samuel Marx and Joyce Vanderveen, fearing that the scandal would ruin Harlow’s career, as a money making source to him and his studio, MGM boss Louis B. Mayer directed his staff to “fix” the evidence to make it look like a suicide. Mayer’s scripted version of Paul Bern’s death became the official cause of death passed down in Hollywood lore. Furthermore, to support their same purpose MGM skilled script writers tarnished Paul’s name, falsely transforming it from “The nicest man in Hollywood “ and the “Hollywood Father Confessor” to a “mean, impotent wife-beater, who committed suicide.”

Excerpts from the eulogy delivered by Cinemactor Conrad Nagel: "This can't be the end. His gentle spirit is still with us. We bid you Godspeed, Paul Bern, on your journey to a better place and we say here in your own words and in all reverence: 'We'll be seeing you.'"

A GREAT INJUSTICE WAS DONE TO A GREAT PIONEER AND CONTRIBUTER TO THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD, AND HIS COMMUNITY, AN UNSEPHISH, CHARITABLE AND PEOPLE-ORIENTED MAN.

In the 1960s when the stars on the Hollywood walk of fame were first established, about 15,000 of them, that of Paul Bern was forgotten and pushed into oblivion, probably due to the untrue and bad publicity around his death.

IN CONCLUSION, THIS WEBSITE IS A COMMUNITY-DRIVEN PETITION TO CLEAR PAUL BERN’S NAME AND HONOR HIM POSTHUMOUSLY WITH A MORE THAN WELL-DESERVED STAR ON THE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME…BY THE STAR OF HIS BELOVED WIFE, JEAN HARLOW.
